Company or Affiliation: CTIT
Mailing Address:

Drienerlolaan 5 (building Zilverling)
P.O. Box 217
7500 AE ENSCHEDE
the Netherlands

E-mail: i.bante [at] utwente.nl

Having an eye for business opportunities is a common theme throughout my career. Research performed during my M.Sc. studies resulted in a patent application by the multinational Unilever. As group leader agro-biotechnology research, and later as business development manager at the multinational DSM, one of my main activities was the evaluation of potential acquisition candidates. Concurrently with this last position, I started my first private company as I spotted a market opportunity in the service sector. As business director of the Institute for Biomedical Technology, I also served as coordinator at the Centre for Homecare and Rehabilitation and Innovative Entrepreneurship.
Now, as business director at CTIT (University of Twente), the largest academic IT research institute in the Netherlands with over 475 researchers, I’m responsible for the business development activities of the institute: being the natural link between scientists and CTIT’s extensive international network of industrial partners, scouting for business opportunities and potential spin-off companies, advising the more than 5 start-ups per year CTIT generates with respect to IPR, licensing, seed and VC funding. The Business Incubator and CTIT’s Smart Systems Business Accelerator appeared to be important instruments in the creation of the more than 630 spin-off companies surrounding the university. Since 2002, I’m also serving as board member of the Technology Circle Twente, a network of approx. 190 high-tech SMEs.
