Idiaper receives Best Student Paper Award at IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging

Christian Jaques, a researcher in the Idiap’s Computational Bioimaging Group and PhD student in electrical engineering at EPFL was awarded the Best Student Paper Award at the latest IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging.

Attended by some 750 researchers and clinicians, the symposium is one of the most renowned scientific event in this field. Thanks to his paper, entitled "Multi-Spectral Widefield Microscopy of the Beating Heart through Post-Acquisition Synchronization and Unmixing," Christian Jaques was distinguished by his peers.

Co-authored with collaborators at the Institut de Recherche en Ophtalmologie (IRO) in Sion, the paper describes a method for producing multi-spectral movies of the beating heart in developing zebrafish larvae. Specifically, it returns a spectral signature at each pixel and time during the cardiac heartbeat, which the researchers now plan to use for characterizing cardiac physiology during normal and diseased development. Jaques' computational method (based on image registration and spectral unmixing) overcomes several shortcomings of currently available spectral imaging systems, which often require strong illumination that could be detrimental to biological samples, have slow acquisition times that are incompatible with imaging the fast motion of the heart, or have a limited spatial resolution.

The IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) is a scientific conference dedicated to mathematical, algorithmic, and computational aspects of biological and biomedical imaging, across all scales of observation. It aims to foster knowledge transfer among different imaging communities and to contribute to an integrative approach to biomedical imaging. ISBI is a joint initiative from the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS).
