The WolfCam project, conducted in partnership between the OPPAL association and the Idiap Research Institute, aims to develop an artificial intelligence system capable of automatically detecting wolves from thermal images. Based on a large video dataset collected by OPPAL, the project includes semi-automatic data annotation, the development of algorithms for wolf detection and tracking, as well as behavior-based recognition. It explores advanced computer vision methods, such as YOLO and SSD networks, along with temporal processing and image stabilization techniques. Running over 9 months (June 2025 – March 2026), this project represents a first step toward a comprehensive computer-assisted monitoring and deterrence protocol to protect herds and promote human-wolf coexistence.
