Generative AI for Industrial Design Engineering

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) currently disrupt globally various business sectors by fundamentally changing existing processes but also offering unique opportunities. As in other fields, in industrial design the demand for experts, who are highly skilled in both AI and engineering, is large and will further increase substantially. Our doctoral training programme GenAIDE: Generative AI for Industrial Design Engineering aims to provide high-level scientific training to 13 Doctoral Candidates who will explore the disruptive AI technologies to advance computer-aided engineering from mere support tools to proactive AI partners in heterogenous (hybrid) design teams. They will investigate and develop emerging concepts, methods, and infrastructures to deliver an integrated vision of Human-AI teaming in design engineering, building the foundations to re-think how future engineering will happen in an AI augmented setting. GenAIDE will cover unmet needs in doctoral training at the European and international level, relying on the complementary expertise of 15 excellent world-leading academic and non-academic partners exploring novel synergies between natural language-based human machine interaction, nature-inspired optimization, and machine learning under the consideration of social impacts in Human-AI teams, all embedded and contextualized in industrial design applications. LLMs dramatically change the way of Human-AI interaction and access to domain knowledge, thus defining a phase transition not only on the productivity of engineering teams but on the complexity of addressable design problems. In GenAIDE, we will lay the grounds to ensure that Europe will attract and prepare the needed researchers and practitioners in industry and academia. Our training programme will also serve as a blueprint for new curricula in AI-assisted engineering at universities and research institutes.
