Foundation of the Idiap Research Institute by 6 members : Dalle Molle Foundation for the Quality of Life, the city of Martigny, the State of Valais, Swisscom, the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the University of Geneva.

Legal statuts : independant non-profit research institute.

Idiap employed about 10 people active mainly in the field of speech recognition.
