Idiap distinguishes two students for their outstanding work

Each year the institute gives two awards to distinguish two of its students. In 2023, the Best Paper Award went to Tobias Löw, and the Student Award to Hatef Otroshi Shahreza. Congratulations!

For his paper in robotics entitled “Geometric Algebra for Optimal Control with Applications in Manipulation Tasks”, Tobias Löw received Idiap’s Best Paper Award. This article demonstrates that the modelling of cost functions for optimal control can be done uniformly across different geometric primitives, leading to a low symbolic complexity of the resulting expressions and a geometric intuitiveness. The benchmarks provided in the article show that such an approach provides a faster resolution of robot kinematics problems than state-of-the-art software libraries used in robotics. Tobias is part of the Robot Learning & Interaction group.

Tobias Löw receives his award from the President of the Conseil d'Etat of Valais.

Part of the Biometrics Security & Privacy Group, Hatef Otroshi contributed to several research problems ranging from vulnerability assessment, biometric template protection or face recognition. He is a productive student in terms of publications, and during this last year of his PhD published in top-tier journals/conferences such as IEEE TPAMI, IEEE TIFS, NeurIPS, IEEE ICCV or IEEE ICIP. Some of these publications are the results of his collaboration with several teams in Europe. He also received several awards recently. He will finish his PhD in May 2024. Particularly performing, he received Idiap Student Award 2023.

Hatef Otroshi receives his award from the President of the Conseil d'Etat of Valais.
