Position:

Type: Internship
Name (ID): Internship position in smart battery management (OP-20200603-175900)
Supervised by: Jerome KAEMPF

Description:

Within the context of an Innosuisse Project named INNO-SBM (Smart Battery Network – www.mobigo.club), the Energy Informatics group from the Idiap Research Institute is looking for a motivated Intern or Master student.

Mobility in Switzerland accounts for about a third of the energy consumption and nearly 40% of the carbon dioxide emissions (not accounting for international flights). Electric mobility has been seen as a way to reduce our carbon footprint, relying mostly on renewable energy sources (hydraulics, solar, wind and biomass). However, the vehicles need to carry batteries, whose autonomy is often a source of worries for the users. The project aims at evaluating more precisely the autonomy of batteries in electric scooters from Mobi-Let.

Based on the information pushed from smart batteries, the candidate will build a database and construct a predictor model for the estimation of the remaining autonomy for a specific driver. The acquired data from the smart batteries comprises the GPS position together with the battery state and use. The candidate is expected to acquire and process the data from 3-4 users having different driving styles (accelerating a lot or not) and routes (flat or hilly). Finally, the candidate will take part in the deployment of his predictor model in a cloud-based solution.

The ideal Intern or Master student should hold (or follow) a Master in computer science with a specific focus on Machine Learning (ML) and a special interest for mobility solutions. Alternatively, the candidate could hold (or follow) a Master in an energy-related field with a specific focus in data management and a special expertise in applying ML techniques. Additionally the candidate should have strong programming skills and be familiar with Python and the Linux environment.

The successful candidate will join the Energy Informatics group at Idiap, under the supervision of Dr Jérôme Kämpf. Appointment to this position is for a period of 3 to 6 months. Starting date is early summer 2020.

Interested candidates are invited to submit a cover letter and a CV through the Idiap online recruitment system. All queries related to the advertised position can be sent to Dr Jérôme Kämpf (jerome.kaempf@idiap.ch).

The Idiap places great emphasis on gender diversity and we particularly encourage women to apply.
