Type: Postdoc
Name (ID): Postdoc in database management and data integration for spatially enriched energy-related information (OP-20200529-163043)
Supervised by: Jerome KAEMPF

Within the context of a European Project H2020 named EnerMaps (Open Source Tools to Share, Compare, and Reuse Low-Carbon Energy Data -, the Energy Informatics group from the Idiap Research Institute is looking for a qualified Postdoc in Database Management and Data Integration for spatially enriched energy-related information.

Data is fundamental for energy research and analysis. From electricity grid data to maps of heating needs, the management of the energy transition depends on the availability and the quality of a large range of data. However, data is often difficult to find, mixed in different repositories, as well as fragmented. This results in a lack of efficiency for research and energy management. The project aims at tackling this problematic by 1) developing a single-entry point where scientific publications, datasets, and grey literature can be found using text-mining algorithms, and 2) providing an efficient visualization and selection tool in an up-to-date and user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI).

By defining the EnerMaps database structure, the candidate will be responsible for the data integration process into a single centralized repository following a unique schema structure. Moreover, the candidate will participate to the processing of data, and in the case of not georeferenced data, to their spatial enrichment to get visualizations in a GIS environment. Finally, the candidate will take part in the open-source publishing of the EnerMaps database through the EnerMaps Data Management Tool.

The ideal Postdoc candidate should hold a PhD in computer science with a specific focus on Machine Learning (ML) and a special interest for geospatial databases. Alternatively, the candidate could hold a PhD in an energy-related field with a specific focus in data management and a special expertise in applying ML techniques.

The candidate should have expertise in some of the topics listed below:
• XML Schema Definition (XSD)
• PostgreSQL databases with PostGIS objects

Additionally the candidate should have strong programming skills and be familiar with Python and/or C++ and the Linux environment.

The successful candidate will join the Energy Informatics group at Idiap, under the supervision of Dr Jérôme Kämpf. Appointment to this position is for a period of 1 year, with a possibility of a short extension.

Starting date lies between August 1st and December 1st 2020 (open to discussion). The gross salary is in the Postdoc range of 80’000 CHF per year.

Interested candidates are invited to submit a cover letter, a detailed CV, and the names of three references through the Idiap online recruitment system. All queries related to the advertised position can be sent to Dr Jérôme Kämpf (
