Supervised by: Mathew Magimai Doss

The Idiap Research Institute seeks one PhD student in the context of Swiss National Science Foundation funded project TIPS (Towards Integrated processing of Physiological and Speech signals). This project builds upon the CSEM-Idiap project AUDIO-REAPPS, which has initiated development of a platform to acquire speech signal synchronously with physiological signals and body sounds through wearable sensors and to model them jointly for spoken language processing. Briefly, the proposed research and development in the TIPS project, focusing on physiological parameters prediction and mental stress detection, is situated at the intersection of speech processing, physiological signal processing, machine learning and sensor fusion.

The ideal candidate should hold a Masters degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering or related fields. She or he should have a background in signal processing, applied mathematics, optimization or linear algebra. The applicant should also have strong programming skills and be familiar with Python/Perl, C/C++, shell scripting and with the Linux environment. A solid experience in speech processing or machine learning or both is an asset.

The successful candidate will be part of the Speech and Audio Processing group at Idiap. She or he will work under the supervision of Dr. Mathew Magimai Doss. She or he will collaborate with the postdoctoral researcher (funded through the project) and with our collaborators on the wearable sensors side from CSEM ( The successful candidate will also become a doctoral student at EPFL conditional on parallel application to, and acceptance by, the EPFL Doctoral School EDEE. The PhD position appointment is for a maximum of 4 years, provided successful progress, and should lead to a dissertation.
