Speech Technology for COMINT

A good deal of speech communication still takes place over standard radio channels; examples include air-traffic control and ham radio. However, monitoring such communications is onerous. The purpose of the project is to evaluate whether recent advances in speech technology could be of use to Armasuisse in monitoring these channels. The project has two work packages: A first package addresses voice activity detection (VAD) in order to identify whether and at what points speech exists on a channel. A second package focuses on automatic speech recognition (ASR), where the words spoken should be transcribed. The challenges in these tasks are associated with the low bandwidth and high noise nature of the channels, and with finding suitable "open" data with which to train and evaluate.
