Idiap has a new opening for an Internship position in Machine Learning for Energy Informatics

In view of a new collaboration between the Idiap Research Institute and the “Centre de Recherche Energétiques et Municipales” (CREM,, we welcome applications for a 6- to 12-month internship. The intern will be co-supervised by the head of the Uncertainty Quantification and Optimal Design group at Idiap (PD Dr. David Ginsbourger) and by the director of CREM (Dr. Jakob Rager) and will work on statistical and machine learning approaches to optimization problems under uncertainty arising in energy planning.

A central aspect of the internship will be to perform sound and efficient global sensitivity analyses, highlighting the most influential (combination of) variables on solvers in use at CREM. This will notably involve recent approaches relying on Gaussian process models with adapted covariance kernels, but also investigations on the right probability distributions to use for the inputs (elicitation). If time allows, we will also tackle a new class of bi-level optimization problems motivated by energy planning.

Starting date: As soon as possible, but screening will continue until the position has been filled.

Applications: Through our Online Recruitment System (ORS) only. In addition to the usual CV, we strongly encourage applicants to clearly identify how they could contribute to our targeted activities with a cover letter.

Sought profile: Candidates should hold (at least) a master degree, in engineering, physics, computer science, statistics or applied mathematics. She or he should also demonstrate a strong background in mathematical and machine learning topics, C/C++ programming, Perl, R and/or Python scripting languages.

Idiap and the CREM are independent, not-for-profit, research institute recognized and funded by the Swiss Federal Government, the State of Valais, and the City of Martigny.

Both institutes offer competitive salaries and conditions at all levels in a young, high-quality, dynamic, and multicultural environment. Idiap is an equal opportunity employer and is actively involved in the "Advancement of Women in Science" European initiative. The Institute seeks to maintain a principle of open competition (on the basis of merit) to appoint the best candidate, provides equal opportunity for all candidates, and equally encourage both genders to apply.

Idiap and CREM are located in the town of Martigny in Valais, a scenic region in the south of Switzerland, surrounded by the highest mountains of Europe, and offering exceptional quality of life, exciting recreational activities, including hiking, climbing and skiing, as well as varied cultural activities. It is within close proximity to Lausanne and Geneva. Although Idiap is located in the French part of Switzerland, English is the official working language. Free French lessons are also provided on a complimentary basis.
