New opening for a PhD position on "Automatic speech recognition beyond hidden Markov Models"

We invite applications for a PhD position at the Idiap Research Institute in automatic speech recognition (ASR), with the goal of improving Hidden Markov (HMM)-based state-of-the-art systems, in the context of a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

The PhD student will perform research in ASR within the Audio and Speech Processing group. Going beyond HMM-based models, the student will exploit new trends in Deep Neural Networks (DNN), episodic modeling, and (hierarchical) Sparse Recovering modeling, also including multilingual and robustness aspects.

Appointment for the PhD position is typically for 4 years, provided successful progress, and should lead to a PhD dissertation, granted by the “Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)”. Annual gross salary starts at around 50,000 Swiss Francs (first year).

Working at Idiap in Martigny, the successful candidate will become a doctoral student at EPFL, and thus has to be accepted for enrollment by the Electrical Engineering Doctoral School (EDEE) or the Computer, Communication and Information Sciences Doctoral School (EDIC) before joining Idiap.

Candidates should hold a master degree, in engineering, physics, computer science, or applied mathematics, and have interests or experience in speech processing. She or he should also have strong background in statistics, linear algebra, signal processing, C/C++ programming, Perl and/or Python scripting languages, and Linux environment. A prior knowledge of/experience with hidden Markov models, artificial neural networks, or acoustic phonetics would be a distinct advantage. The candidates should also demonstrate good communication and writing skills in English.
