Idiap has a new opening for two PhD positions in Pathological Speech Processing

The Idiap Research Institute seeks qualified candidates for two PhD positions in the area of pathological speech processing. The research and development will take place in the context of EU funded Marie-Sklodowska Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks European Training Networks TAPAS - Training Network on Automatic Processing of Pathological Speech .

The successful candidate will be part of the TAPAS network consisting of 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESR) spread across seven European countries and will work on one of the following ESR topics, of which Idiap is the host institute,

ESR 3 - Learning detection of pathological speech

ESR 13 - Rapid development of speech technology for pathological speech

Eligibility criteria: 
1. The candidate must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to her/his recruitment. 
2. The candidate holds a Masters degree or equivalent, which formally entitles to embark on a Doctorate. 
3. Do not holds a PhD degree 
4. At the time of recruitment, the candidate must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of her/his research careers.

 

The ideal candidate should hold a Masters degree in computer science, electrical engineering or related fields. She or he should have a background in signal processing, applied mathematics, optimization and linear algebra. The applicant should also have strong programming skills and be familiar with Python/Perl, C/C++, shell scripting and with the Linux environment. A solid experience in speech processing or machine learning or both is an asset.

 

The successful candidate will be part of the Speech and Audio Processing group at Idiap. She or he will work under the supervision of Dr. Mathew Magimai Doss. The successful candidate will also become a doctoral student at EPFL conditional on parallel application to, and acceptance by, the EPFL Doctoral School. The appointment for both the PhD positions is for a maximum of 4 years, provided successful progress, and should lead to a dissertation.

 

As stipulated in the MSCA Work Programme, the gross salary will be about EUR 4'117 (Living allowance and Mobility allowance) plus a family allowance of EUR 500(if applicable at the time of start. It will not change after that) per month for the first 36 months. The 4th year salary should be on par with the Swiss NSF PhD salary.

 

The expected starting date is negotiable, preferably first half of year 2018.
