New opening for an Internship position: Data-flow architectures for Automatic Speech Recognition
Aug 11, 2010
-
Data-flow is a signal processing paradigm where modular components can be arranged in directed graphs to perform complex tasks. Data-flow lends itself to block calculations that take advantage of the hierarchical caches on modern CPUs. It also naturally modularises flow-based algorithms such that the components are easily re-used.
-
New opening for an Internship position: Weighted Finite State Transducer compression for Automatic Speech Recognition
Aug 12, 2010
-
WFSTs represent a means of pre-compiling the grammars used by ASR decoders. Such pre-compiled grammars tend to lead to both quicker decoding, because duplication of weights and paths is minimised, and simpler decoder implementations, because the composition process is offline. Pre-compiled grammars are quite large, sometimes limited only by the size of the memory on the host CPU.

New opening for an Internship position: Comparing Topic Models and Concept Networks for measuring text similarity
Nov 26, 2010
-
The goal of the project is to compare two types of advanced methods for semantic similarity that make use of knowledge about relationships between words, learned from an initial set of documents. These methods are developed by the supervisors' research teams. The first method uses probabilities of word co-occurrences to infer "semantic topics", which are synonym-like relationships. The second method makes use of Wikipedia to determine conceptual relations between words or sets of words.
-
New opening for an Internship position: Stabilizing ranking in a just-in-time information retrieval system
Nov 26, 2010
-
The goal of this master project is to develop a model for stabilizing the ranking of the results in time, so that their variations are acceptable to a user, making a trade-off between conservatism and novelty, and maximizing relevance at every step. The work will use recent approaches to ranking in information retrieval known as learning-to-rank, and will include also the development of metrics for assessing the quality and usefulness of the proposed stabilized ranking model.

New opening for a Postdoctoral position in Non Invasive Adaptive Hand Prosthetics.
Jan 24, 2011
-
The state of the art in hand prosthetics, at the time of writing, does not offer more than 2-3 degrees of freedom and a very coarse control of the force, as there is no haptic feedback. Patients interface with the prosthesis via surface electromyography (sEMG), recorded using surface electrodes. Learning how to control the device through many input sEMG channels is a long and difficult process for most patients, that therefore settles for limited and very simplified movements (open/close). The goal of this project is to develop a family of algorithms able to significantly augment the dexterity, and reduce the training time, for sEMG controlled prosthesis. The research will be conducted within the context of a recently funded Swiss project including European partners.
